About Billy Kenoi

On November 4th, 2008, Mayor Billy Kenoi was elected to serve a four year term of office as Hawaii County’s Chief Executive.

Campaigning across the island on a platform of collaboration and working together, he earned over 56% of voter support in the politically historic year of 2008. Mayor Kenoi was sworn into office on December 1st of that year.

Who is Billy Kenoi?

Billy Kenoi is a trusted advocate for our Hawaii Island community. He listens to our concerns and responds with programs and services that address the problems identified. He leads collaboratively and honors the hard work and commitment of our Island residents. Billy Kenoi understands government at the Federal, State, and County levels. Before being elected Mayor of Hawaii County, he served as a United States Legislative Aid to Senator Daniel K. Inouye. He served the Judiciary as a Deputy Public Defender and he served as Executive Assistant working under the former Mayor Kim.

Billy Kenoi is committed to working together with businesses, government, faith organizations, unions, and public and private non-profit groups to tackle tough local issues. He believes that all problems have solutions, and that progress is always achieved through hard work, collaboration, and determination.

Billy works tirelessly, both as a professional, and as a community volunteer to address difficult family and community problems such as substance abuse, domestic violence, and homelessness.

Billy has tremendous respect and aloha for our island’s children, our families, and our community. He understands that the health and safety of our community depends upon the health of our environment and the respect for our culture, our kupuna, and our values.

Billy knows what it’s like to overcome hardship and obstacles. His experiences growing up on Hawaii Island and the encouragement and support he received from coaches, teachers, and leaders in our community has instilled in him a deep sense of responsibility to inspire youth to pursue their dreams with integrity, hard work, and determination.

He has made a commitment
to be a positive role model for our children. He is often asked to speak to schools in every community on our Island to share with our children that they are capable of achieving their dreams, and that they can realize their potential through the belief that our community is a place of hope, opportunity, and possibilities.


 

Billy believes, with all his heart, that a healthy and safe community begins with healthy children and healthy families.

Mayor Billy Kenoi earned a law degree from Wm S. Richardson School of Law and a degree in Political Science at the University of Massachusetts.

Billy was born in Kalapana, graduated from Waiakea High, and attended both the Hawaii Community College and UH Hilo before graduating from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst as a member of the UMASS Political Science Honor Society. He then got his Law Degree from UH Manoa’s William S. Richardson School of Law.

Billy is a member of the Hawaii State Bar Association. He is a board member with the Hawaii Justice Foundation and the Hawaii Island United Way. He coaches AYSO Soccer and teaches Administration of Justice at the Hawaii Community College.

Billy was recognized by Hawaii Business Magazine in 2007 as one of “25 people who will help shape Hawaii over the next 25 years”.
